Shifting into first after idling in neutral

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

who cares. for all of you who want to overanalyze stuff, all the synchro has to do is slow down the clutch disk and the input shaft. woopty do big deal.

floor clutch, put it in 1st and go. dont sit around and bullshit around waiting for the shafts to stop spinning, or your gonna get rearended

Or you could watch the opposing traffic light so you know when the light's about to change and can do your waiting while the light's still red...

Place shifter in Neutral
Start engine and let it idle with foot off the clutch.
VERY SLOWLY move shifter toward reverse gear position. Stop when you just start to hear the teeth begin to gnash.
Holding the shift lever in that position, briskly disengage the clutch. Start counting 1-Pizza, 2-Pizza as soon as the clutch pedal hits the floor and continue until the gear gnashing noise stops.
Yeah, but, that slight grinding of the teeth is slowing the shaft down faster than it would spin down on its own. So, that could be off a few fractions of a second :P

Sounds like a good test though. I'll try it out tonight - I'm curious to see how long it takes.
Let me know what you find. There is another way to do this:
Let it idle in Neutral with the clutch engaged.
Quickly stab the clutch pedal to the floor and count up to 5 pizzas and then quickly shift into reverse. If it grinds, it was still spinning. Do it again and count to a greater number of pizzas. If 5 pizzas produced no grinding, try 4 or 3 pizzas. Still no grind? Try 2 pizzas, or something just less than 2 pizzas (no, not 1-Pizza & a calzone. More like 1-pizza, 2-P...). This alternate method won't work with synchronized reverse.

It's far too early in the morning for me to be hungry for pizza.

If they whack me for not moving fast enough they had better have insurance. FWIW, I stomp the clutch down a few seconds before I'm ready to shift and start rolling anyway. If I need to move faster I just shift it more gently.

Not overanalyzing stuff, just learning about how things work. This is the 'technical issues' area after all.

...and order some pizza boxes.

Pizza from a local pizza joint would be great right now.
