What's wrong with my car??? Help fellow standard shifters!

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Beating on for me is defined by: 1)Knowingly abusing the vehicle by running it long and hard (not what she said) and/or not maintaining it. 2)Unknowingly causing damage to parts of the car due to lack of knowledge.

If you are doing hard launches and redline shifts, this does NOT mean you are beating on the car. You can be running it hard, and at the same time being mentally aware of what you are doing, and doing the proceedures at hand correctly

A street car needs little work generally, turbo cars need more work as they are being pushed more..... The harder you drive a car and the more power you put down the more work the car needs. Drag cars that get rebuilt after every meeting is the extreme of this.

If you are putting out 100ft/lb more than stock then you better bet it's going to need more regular maintenance, also higher quality parts to stand up to the higher stresses. I don't think beating on a car is bad... if its stock let the oil temp get to spec then go for it, stock cars are usually tuned safely. You make it more powerful than stock.... then make sure enough water is going through the engine, that the engine is getting enough fuel at the top end, etc... Beat on the car, enjoy it but the further you go past stock power the more maintenance and the higher quality parts you'll need to keep the car running at it's best.

My car is completely stock except for a useless intake someone decided to put on it, so as long as I stick to the maintenance toyota recommends then I feel just fine "beating" on it. I check things regularly though and try fix problems before they put my car at risk.

But you have to pay to play.

I don't consider it beating on my car...more like pushing my car. I treat her well and she has nothing but top quality aftermarket parts added to her.

Vdub tuner drove the car and as soon as he pushed the clutch in told me it was gone. Drove it and saw the symptoms: Clutch is on it's way out for sure. Said I could drive it like this for a good bit longer as long as I go easy on her, until I can save up the $$$ for the higher performance clutch kit. The reason it won't shift is b/c the clutch is slipping and not fully disengaging fast enough.

That part doesn't make sense. When you step on the pedal, it pulls the clutch away from the flywheel. It doesn't matter if it would be slipping when it's touching or not, because it's not touching.

i think i brought this up before but i can't find it. oh well.

the only thing that would cause a clutch to not disengage (when the pedal isn't stuck) is either the hydraulic system is leaking, worn seals or just old and crapped out. if its a cable clutch, then the cable is stretched.

or maybe there is gum on your clutch. TRY SLIPPING IT MOAR!!

Nah, it's 100% the clutch and I'm replacing it with a stronger clutch/lightened flywheel. Can't wait! 8)

do a clutch burnout and get holes ripped into your flywheel from the clutch rivets. its the cheap way to get a lightened flywheel

When you step on the clutch pedal, it doesn't actually move the clutch disc. It unclamps the pressure plate, so that the clutch disc is no longer clamped tightly between the flywheel and the pressure plate. Now if the transmission input shaft splines are rusty, or the clutch disc hub is deformed, the clutch disc can remain stuck up against the flywheel and still be capable of transmitting torque even though it's not being clamped by the pressure plate.

This thread started off good but became epic fail pretty quick.

Point is, it was the clutch all along (not me beating on the car or my horrible shifting skills) and I'm ordering up an upgraded setup soon. Until then, I'm driving the car like a granny and it sucks! Having torque out the @$$ available right by my feet and not being able to floor it...it's torture I tell you.

Now THAT right there is the kind of expertise that this thread needed!

I've seen that a couple times lately, I think...what's up with that? Some meme I missed?
