Re: low idle, stalling
1200 is definitely high for idle speed. Normal idle for most manual cars is between 600 and 800. Automatic versions of the same car usually idle a bit higher.

Yeah, I know mine idles high. That's one of the reasons it's been at the shop for the past 2 weeks.

Not for a '70s carbureted inline-4. I had to tune up mine from about 650 to 900-1000.AHTOXA wrote:1200 is definitely high for idle speed. Normal idle for most manual cars is between 600 and 800. Automatic versions of the same car usually idle a bit higher.
Now for something more on topic.
Check:
-Cold start injector (if it has one, my '73 Merc V8 has one) If that gets stuck open then it'll flood the engine out causing it to hesitate. Do you smell gas when it does this?
and as described before:
Check for plugged injectors or worn out spark plugs (shouldn't be over .070"). Worn plugs will sometimes fail to fire because the spark can't jump the large gap, and if they're too big, they'll fail to fire all the time.
Plugged injectors will fail to inject fuel, cylinder wont fire, yadda yadda yadda, ???, profit.
