Possible exhaust problem?

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Possible exhaust problem?

Post by FDSpirit »

This is one of those times I realllllly wish I had a camcorder. My car makes this weird ass noise at around 2500, 3000RPMs. It sounds like a metallic type noise. I can't pinpoint exactly how it comes about, because it doesn't do it all the time. I think when I'm a little bit less aggressive on the throttle it makes the noise. Seems when the revs rise slower it makes the noise. That's the best I can give. I was also thinking it could be the firewall. There's a crack, but I need to go back and check to see if its moving. My car hasn't lost any performance, fuel economy or anything like that. Cold weather? I don't think it showed up until the weather started getting colder. One guy on Civic forums said his car does the same thing and runs fine. But he said it may also need a valve adjustment :? . I'm posting as exhaust because my resonator may be the problem and that's what I'm leaning towards. It's been pretty nice out, so maybe I can check it out this weekend.

When I first got my Legend it made a metal-metal noise when running sometimes. It was actually a small strip of metal on the bottom of the car near the back that would touch the exhaust when running. I just bent it out of the way with my thumb; problem solved. Could be something as simple as that.

Might be that. It does have a tiny crack in it, but that has been there since I got the car. Padauk, that's more of what I was thinking. Hopefully the weather will stay like this and I can check. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I seriously think its a simple issue. I could've easily picked up a piece of metal considering where I work.

Try revving the engine with the throttle in the engine bay and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

i usually just use a long screwdriver. metal tip touching the point i want to listen to, and the handle to my ear. works perfectly.

back on topic, my truck makes a weird metallic pinging sound when i start it up after it hasn't been running for awhile. goes away after a little bit of driving and was wondering what it was so i searched some mazdatruck sites and found out that when the oil sits in the sump to long and drains out of the valvetrain it takes awhile to work its way back up the valvetrain and theres a pocket of air between one of the rocker arms and the cam. this causes a clashing between the two for like half a mile before the oil pressure forces some oil up there and fixes the problem. with vtec burning oil that could also be the problem? but probably not

It's a Honda thing and likely to be the heat shield. I've got it on my Teg as well at certain RPM in certain gear. Hits the right spot with the resonating sound waves and makes the rattle accentuated.
