i would think that a lo-jack system with a program installed so that when its driven off the lot without permission it cuts the engine would work much better.eggwich delfiero wrote:I don't see how video surveillance would help, either, unless someone is monitoring it in real time or there is one fixed entrance/exit the perp needs to use.

Yeah. I was very confused about it. There was, however, one G8 that was locked. There was only a handful of them, but it was pretty stupid on their part. All the Cobalts.....unlocked. Buick Luzernes....unlocked. I've never been to a dealership with so many unlocked doors while the damn dealership was closed. A while back, there was a lot around here with about 12 Hummers. These idiots left the keys in the actual vehicle, unlocked. I'm sure you know what happened next.paul34 wrote:They left that all unlocked? Wow, somebody write GM - looks like another dealer that shouldn't have their contract renewed.

Sir, we shall take our ideas, combine them, and get rich. No expensive Lo-Jack necessary. Just a device that is in radio contact with a base unit, as I said before. A button is pressed on the base unit to let the car drive off the lot. If the signal isn't given, the engine is cut. It could be factory-installed. We could make millions!LHOswald wrote:i would think that a lo-jack system with a program installed so that when its driven off the lot without permission it cuts the engine would work much better.

^^In combo of the two ideas above, I asked this question of Jalop readers, and a friend in Australia mentioned that at the Toyota dealership he works at they have some kind of "Immobilizer" they install on Landcruisers, and only Landcruisers, as they are the only vehicles big/powerful enough to drive through the fence. (Not sure if the immobilizer was a full-time deal or just activated once vehicle left the perimeter though.)

I'm pretty sure all new cars have immobilizers with coded keys as standard equipment.

Im very familiar with that technology. Saab has been using it since at least the mid '90s

Re: Alarm systems - Factory Vs. Dealer installs
yeah i remember reading about that somewhere awhile ago. theres some chip in the key that sends an encrypted message to a chip in the ignition and if the code isn't right the engine doesn't start.

Correct. GM and Chrysler in specific have been doing the resistor trick since the dinosaurs roamed the earth.

^ lolz
If any good came of this thread, it got me to look up what I can control on my alarm system and how, and then I removed the soft double honk that happened whenever I set or deactivated the alarm. Less noise pollution ftw!

Noise lets me know it actually worked. Besides, Saab alarm chirps arent bad. Loud, but not bad.

Although it requires me to be looking at the vehicle if I'm far away, I prefer light confirmation. If I'm up close I can hear the power locks.

I enjoy the lights as well. My locks arent particularly loud. Though honestly with the distance you get with a Saab remote (notoriously small), you can just watch them through the window.
