Wait a second. Are you saying that the shifter will not go down and move left at all? Sounds like a linkage issue. What is disassembled exactly?
If the shifter does not go into gear: does it go into gear when the car is stopped with the engine off? If so, you likely have a hydraulic issue.
More details, please.

Re: I have a 95 jetta w\a5 speed linkage probs.
I was at first having a problem getting it in first gear. At the time I was able to press down to get in to reverse under the track to the left. I was told the problem I was having was I needed to get a repair kit that it was worn and needed to be replaced. Here is a link to what i got:

I hired a guy to put it in and apparently he had some problems installing it. After he installed the kit the shift stick was very loose and i wasn't able to press down to get in to reverse. I did get into first fine though.

If it's a linkage issue it's hard to really pinpoint and I must be honest - I am not very familiar with it.

Dubbers unite. Didn't one of you guys have a Jetta from that generation?
