Need help Badly. Question about starter

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Need help Badly. Question about starter

Post by binx0101 »

so i just bought a 1990 honda civic with and ls motor and there was only 1 bolt on the starter

I bought a second bolt so that it would be installed properly and the threads for the second bolt hole are completely missing. I cant drive around like this either because the slightest jerk knocks the starter out of place no matter how tight i have the first bolt. Then after i get it in place again, a hard stop or like i said the slightest jerk knocks it out of place.

From what ive read a heli-coil would fix it best but theres absolutely no room to turn the tap cause theres only about 1/4 of and inch between the bolt hole and top of the transmission block.

Is there any other way to fix this other than taking the entire transmission out?

Can you use a nut on the other side?

Can a nut be welded in place without taking everything apart?

How hacky do you want to get? Could you use a thicker bolt and force it to half-assed thread itself into the hole, or JB Weld/epoxy a bolt's threads or head in place? Would bailing wire hold it?

Maybe you can just park on a hill and bump start all the time.

Like he said!

Pictures would help.

I'm thinking that the second fastener is primarily needed to keep the starter from swiveling out of position. You could use some JB weld to epoxy the second bolt in place in the hole with the stripped-out threads.

If not, is it possible to redrill the stripped hole so that it passes completely through the casting? Then you could put a longer bolt in there, with a washer and nut on the other side.

I actually jus looked at it again and theres threads about 3 inches back from the bolt opening. deff. not how its supposed to be originally tho. Im gunna try to find a bolt long enough to grab those threads and use some epoxy to fill the gap where there isn't any threads. Ill let u know if it works out. If it doesn't then lemme know if any of you wanna buy a lemon =/

Sounds more like someone's hack job more than a lemon.

I'm sure there is a way to fix it though.
