Chattering on hill starts

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Chattering on hill starts

Post by bk7794 »

Hello, I am new here and will introduce myself to you guys after this post. I started driving a 1991 honda civic back in March...sorta taught myself with a little help from my father and friends. However ever since the clutch got replaced a few years back from a local mechanic, the clutch has been chattering when using high rpms.

I also have a problem when I get into a higher rpm range, I would say from 3.5k beyond(estimating cause I don't have a tach) I get these slight pulls from the engine. Its like if you started tapping the clutch pedal..but the engine continues steady..

It also chatters a bit when you let off the clutch too early...but that could be my own mistake.

Thanks for reading and answering!

Do you get these little "pulls" or pulses, if I understand correctly, only in certain gears at higher rpm? This could be a sign of a slipping clutch: slip, grip, slip, grip. You feel that as pulsing. It could also be a tuneup issue, perhaps a dirty intake manifold.

Elaborate on the chatter, please.

Which gears?
All conditions?
Temperature related?
Goes away?
Been worse or steady?
What exactly are you doing when you get the chatter.

...also, does it happen more on rainy/humid days?

Thank you guys for the response...I get the chattering only when starting off...obviously mostly in first...however when I just began driving stick I got the chatter in third aswell.. The chattering happens intermittently aswell. Sometimes it will be fine, however that was the case when the clutch was younger...now that its another year the intermittent times when it starts off fine is becoming less intermittent..and more of once in a blue moon. It does it in all conditions, and sometimes on flat land aswell.

What I do, on uphill start, Grab clutch to stabilize car while quickly going to gas and giving it about 2k in revs I would say, maybe less...probably less.. Would the less revs you give it cause it to chatter? I bet the clutch is a crappy clutch aswell because of those little blurps I get in the higher range of the rpm.

It happens I would say in gears 2,3,4,5...

When I have chatter, higher RPM seems to hide it. That's not the same as "the less revs you give it cause it to chatter"; the cause is likely surface irregularities, worn materials, or something like that.

I've had chatter in all manual vehicles I have owned. My theory is that when driven with little slippage, the clutch tends to have minor wear imperfections. A couple of harder launches clears up the chatter for a while for me - few months or more.

Hmmm maybe thats what I need cause it seems like when I do a bit of a harder start then it goes away for a bit...but what do you mean by a hard launch though...what would I do?

Just slip the clutch more than normal. No extremes though. I have also applied the hand brake and done the same. Again, nothing severe, no prolonged or high RPM slip. Just a bit. Try it and see what happens.

I will have to, I will also have to change my driving style. Just saw your post. Sometimes I seem to want to hyper mile my fuel tank so I don't give it a lot of revs and sometimes too much clutch...
