Wheel bearing or what else in 2006 Infiniti G35X?

Synchros shot? Weird noises while shifting? Not sure what needs to be replaced?

Wheel bearing or what else in 2006 Infiniti G35X?

Post by theholycow »

My sister's 2006 Infiniti G35X has what I think is a wheel bearing noise. It comes in around 50mph, and it is a grinding sound that tracks with road speed whether in gear or in neutral and continues up to higher speeds and down to 30mph.

All wheels passed the usual wheel bearing rocking test (grip at 12 and 6 and rock in/out), and spinning them by hand is smooth and noiseless. We jacked the car up with all 4 wheels off the ground and let the engine spin up the wheels to higher speeds, at which point I determined that it was right front.

Before I say it IS a wheel bearing, is there anything else it could be?

 Yeah, I'm pretty darned sure that's what it is. I googled around a bit and these cars are known for eating wheel bearings, and every thread sounds EXACTLY like my sister's story, right down to being told to buy new tires (and subsequently spending a bunch of money on new tires).

... who thinks to suggest a grinding noise means new tires? I'd be SERIOUSLY concerned if my tires made a grinding noise... Because the tire would probably be gone by the time a grinding noise was heard...

Well, you could call it a rough hum or a gentle grind, I guess. Kinda like knobby tires.

Roughly humming while gently grinding. Sounds a bit personal there, Mr. Moo.
