Grinding my gear...
Grinding my gear...
Okay... i have grinded my gear this morning (1st time). It was reverse. And it was because I forgot to push my clutch! stupid me That grinding sound wasn't nice... Hope I didn't kill my gearbox!
One question, is it more damaging to the gear if I grind it at higher RPM? Oh and anybody here have NEVER grind their gear once?

Yes.

^^^ +1
I still grind the occasional gear, when I'm pushing myself.

My first time was over a year after I learned. Its possible, just rare for a regular driver.Prodigal Son wrote:No. (At least, not among those who actually drive manual.)Side1021 wrote:Oh and anybody here have NEVER grind their gear once?
Re: Grinding my gear...
I see. The car was at idle RPM (1.5k RPM due to cold engine) and I was trying to reverse my car back toward the street. I guess i wasn't fully awake (early in the morning), thus I forgot to step on the clutch. After grinding my gear, I've noticed a person standing right across the street looking at me strangely. Hope I didn't scare him.
Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll try not to grind my gear anymore!

I grind reverse maybe once a week or so when I'm either impatient to park or it just happens.
I've ground third gear once and second once, as far as I can remember.

Re: Grinding my gear...
I always grind first... on purpose.. cause at least it gets in gear that way. But other than that i have to baby my second gear synchro till the gearbox oil is warmed up and doing its shit, otherwise no grinds.... i rev match so it doesn't matter if i use the clutch or not.

Double negatives FTL. I thought Prodigal was saying no to "NEVER", meaning that it's normal to occasionally grind.watkins wrote:My first time was over a year after I learned. It's funny how when you grind a forward gear at speed, it almost feels like a razor blade to the ball sack.

Re: Grinding my gear...
I've ground mine numerous times. Mostly standing still, just forgot to put in the clutch, (all the way once). And once when I went down to first at too high a speed (~15mph).
Unless you keep the clutch engaged and try to force it in grinding all the way, no problem.
