Why's my car bucking?

Post by ekincam »

The parking structure at school ascends about 10-12 ft over a distance of about 400 ft so there really isn't a big incline. However, when I have to ascend to higher levels, I find that even though I'm in 1st going about 8 MPH, 1700 RPMs or so, I notice that my car sometimes bucks.

It does this very abruptly and the only way to stop is is apply more gas and hold it. I know that if I let it try and idle up the ram, the bucking will be more severe, but I keep constant pressure on the pedal.

Normal! 1st is a large gear, and is very sensitive to rapid throttle changes. (try jabbing the throttle in 1st in a empty parking lot, it'll rattle your brain).

Be smooth.

Happens to my car too, but not at 1700 rpm, my throttle is quite steady. When I'm going under 1000 rpm in 1st my car starts to buck a bit, I just suspect that my car is just incapable injecting gas evenly at such a light throttle.

RomPirate is right. You have to add a consistent amount of throttle, same with releasing it(except, you know, getting off the gas smoothly). You can't just dump it or slam down on the pedal.

OP, what kinda car? I have noticed that cars with smaller engines/less torque exhibit that kinda bucking with more severity. You need to add more throttle, that's it.

Everybody seems to have missed that part.

It sounds like your car just doesn't have enough torque at 1700RPM to do the job. If that's the case you'll need to slip your clutch the whole way up. I guess that could be a price paid for having an efficient car.

If you know someone with the same car (including manual transmission and engine), see if theirs does it on the same ramp; it could be a problem with your car. Is it up-to-date on its maintenance?

I disagree with the implication that fuel injection is to blame.

Vehicle is a Toyota Camry 2.4L. I doubt I can find another with a 5speed manual to test as they are not very common.

It's a common "feature" of fuel injected vehicles. I've driven numerous stick shifts and never had it happen when the engine had a carb.

Could be related to DFCO or just all of the advanced computer-controlled systems.

I suppose the electronic throttle doesn't help either. I know it doesn't help my shifting. The engine surges as much as 1000 RPM when I push the clutch.

How could it possibly be related to DFCO?

Are you off the throttle completely once the clutch is disengaged? Or maybe it's rev-hang? IDK.

Injectors overcompensating and then shutting off in a continuous cycle.
