Stop signs

Post by shiftmate »

What do you guys do?

I tend to crawl through in 2nd gear when I have good visibility of the intersecting street. Otherwise, I'll stop and shift into first and launch. I need to work on blipping the throttle and downshifting into 1st, so I can crawl even slower than I can in 2nd, giving me more time to scope out intersections with poorer visibility of the intersecting street.

where are you from?? around here (upstate ny), it's probably not worth the risk, both of causing an accident and of getting caught by the cops, to roll through stop signs. either way, it's a good habit to just stop like the sign says, and then get a good look before you go.

Stop signs:

I stop.

Then I put the car into 1st gear and go when the coast is clear.

Isn't that how we should all be doing it?

I come to a complete stop. I look at every direction of road, even if it's a one-way and nobody should be coming from that direction. Per legally defined right-of-way, I try to allow vehicles that were there first or coming from the right to go before me, and I try to go before vehicles not matching those conditions. Anything else is unclear, unpredictable, rude, and could be risky in some conditions.

If you have difficulty launching then you need the practice anyway, and a stop sign is easier than a traffic light where you might not know when you'll be launching. If not then you should be every bit as capable of obeying laws as the driver of an automatic.

Lately I've been stopping. I used to roll at walking speed in Chicago.

I roll through one particular stop sign that my apartment complex put up as long as it is completely clear. But the rest of them, I try to completely stop. As others have said, it's good practice to launch and it's not worth the risk of a ticket/accident.

Everyone at work laughs at me for actually stopping for stop signs. Hey it only takes a couple of extra seconds and it could save me from an accident/ticket. Laugh away people.

My uncle in Vancouver says he gets the horn everytime he comes to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one cares anymore I guess.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

I always come to a complete stop. I know I'd be the guy who gets a ticket the first time I roll through a stop sign .

Also, REALLY bad luck Brian would have the wording changed to:

Rolls through stop sign.
