jerky upshifting question?
jerky upshifting question?
When shifting I release the clutch while giving some gas but I still get jerky shifts. I notice when sitting in neutral that if I rev the engine with the same amount of gas as when releasing the clutch, I'm only bringing it up to 1300-1500. The jerking almost always happens no matter if I release the clutch slow or fast. So is the release why this is happening because I'm not giving enough gas while releasing the clutch or something else?

Re: jerky upshifting question?
I find it best to wait a fraction of a second, then release the clutch.
Are you giving it gas during an upshift, before fully engaging the clutch (fully releasing the pedal)? Bringing the RPM up during an upshift into a higher gear is counter-productive. The idea for shifting up is to allow the RPM to fall to match your next gear. For any given speed the RPM will be lower in the next higher gear (15 mph in 1st could be 2500 RPM, but could be 2000 RPM in 2nd). You want the engine speed lower as you go into higher gear. The car could be trying to compensate and take up the extra torque you're supplying with your left foot.

Re: jerky upshifting question?
giving it gas during an upshift. I know the rpms are supposed to be lower when shifting to the next gear. The rpm range on my car for 2nd to 3th should be around 2000rpm, Thats what it's near while releasing the clutch but it's always above or below that by around 200-400 rpms and I get a jerk. "I notice when sitting in neutral that if I rev the engine with the same amount of gas as when releasing the clutch, I'm only bringing it up to 1300-1500" is it because even though the rpms are show it's near the right spot but my gas is at a lower rpm or something else?

Re: jerky upshifting question?
Is your head jerked towards the windshield, or is it jerked towards the seat?
If windshield, give it more RPM.
If seat, give it less RPM (may have to wait) or slip the clutch longer.

Jerked forward. I tried letting it slip longer didn't help. I know it's me and not the car because my mechanic drive it with me in the car and it wasn't jerking.theholycow wrote:Is your head jerked towards the windshield, or is it jerked towards the seat?

Give it a little more gas for a few more RPM...or shift faster.jeff6666p wrote:Jerked forward. I tried letting it slip longer didn't help. I know it's me and not the car because my mechanic drive it with me in the car and it wasn't jerking.

I've been trying that for the last few days and sometimes I get perfect shifts and others it jerks worst then before. I don't understand why after five months I still can't get it right.

Perhaps the jerk happens earlier in the shifting process?jeff6666p wrote:I've been trying that for the last few days and sometimes I get perfect shifts and others it jerks worst then before. I don't understand why after five months I still can't get it right.

Five months, but how many miles? (And if they're all highway, that's not very effective practice...)

Re: jerky upshifting question?
About 1.5-2k miles so far. Today I changed my timing of when I added gas I got it pretty smooth but on my first upshift to 2nd While releasing the clutch I got some kind of weird noise almost like grinding and a jerk. I shifted into 2nd again after I stopped again and released the clutch alittle slower and then it was smooth and there was no noise or grind. I now need to work more on my down shift because the car nose dives while release the clutch.

I see. Don't beat yourself up about slow progress, you're not practicing much if you're only putting on 2000 miles in 5 months.jeff6666p wrote:About 1.5-2k miles so far.
