I checked out your sig and really like the idea about the flash cards. I'm going to try that. I'm not opposed to anything that can possibly help me better myself as a driver. I do enjoy driving a manual, but it sure does get frustrating sometimes and makes me question buying it sometimes.

i think his sig link recommendations are referring to launching, not downshifting; not sure how i'd incorporate cards into rev-matching, since the rpms at a given speed in a given gear vary widely. don't despair though!! i've been shifting for close to a decade now (longer if you count the 3 years i was driving auto), and i still botch the rev-matches on average at least once a day. you will get smoother and more consistently better shifts, but you need to be patient with yourself.THC's Sig Link wrote:Go somewhere that people won't laugh at you for revving your engine. It referred to launching when I wrote it, but I've since realized that the same exercise will help with rev matching too.

So did a bit of practice Rev Matching on my way to work just now and let's just say that that was a fun experience. I over revved 6th to 5th. 5th to 4th wasn't too terrible(music was too loud so couldn't hear). And turning into my work I braked from 4th gear down to about 25 miles per hour and downshifted to 2nd and it didn't seem to be too far off. Honestly I know it's going to take practice, but blipping feels unnatural lol. My brother says he feathers his when he rev matches(2013 370z), but I wasn't sure if that's good or not to do

The 370Z rev matches on its own, so you can't go by that.
How bad an unmatched shift is depends on the shift. It's a bigger deal on downshifts and shifts when you've been in neutral for a while.
If you slip the clutch, an unmatched shift costs a little clutch life, maybe one or two percent if you do it moderately but consistently. If you don't slip the clutch, habitual badly unmatched shifts could cost engine mounts, transmission mounts, u joints or cv joints, and chiropractor visits.

Oh great, sounds like it's either get it perfect or risk ruining clutch and or other parts.

i think what he was saying was referring to potential damage from terribly botched rev-matches, like 1k rpms or more off. i wouldn't worry much about it as long as you are within a few hundred rpms. the clutch is designed to be the weakest link in the drivetrain, but that doesn't mean it's weak.Ewilon1988 wrote:Oh great, sounds like it's either get it perfect or risk ruining clutch and or other parts.

I figured being off by a few hundred couldn't be that terrible for it. I'm just nervous about myself taking awhile to get used to it and overshooting by a lot for awhile.

That's good to hear. I'm gonna keep practicing. Do you guys do a quick jab of the throttle or just apply some pressure?
