Lots of VW Diesel Buy-Back Cars - (really, there are lots of them in lots all around the country)
...and there aren't lots of options beyond scrapping them.

It would be interesting if there were a way to prevent them from being registered for highway use, but make their parts be available for salvage at junkyards (ok, "Experienced automobile part recycling centers")

Seriously, they are chock full of parts that could be used to maintain non-diesel vehicles. Salvaging the parts would benefit the environment as opposed to production of new parts for maintenance or collision-damage repairs.

Isn't the only truly offending part the computer? Or is the entire engine design unacceptable? Even if so, there is precedent...it seems like just yesterday we had the whole cash for clunkers thing which turned out to be a crap idea, but anyway, they basically poured sand into the intake while running and then called it dead and sent it to the junkyard.

Imagine the hit the parts industry, especially companies specializing in VW parts (such as VW's parts department), would take if suddenly there was such a huge surplus of parts.

To just scrap them as materials is truly offensive to the environment.

Most of them, as I understand it, would need to be retrofitted with a urea system, for which there is no space, to meet the requirements.

Would there be a way to reengineer the system into a vehicle with a larger footprint? It does seem like a waste of Reichsmarks.

Increased hood height, cowl bulge, or an extended front clip could possibly house a retrofit system...but it would probably not be acceptable for manufacturer retrofit without extensive (and expensive) safety, fuel economy, and emissions testing/approvals costing more than the retrofit itself.

Or maybe they could fill the trunk with it and sell the car cheap...plenty of people need a dependable way to get around for less and would sacrifice cargo space. Scrap metal value: $250. I'd pay a lot more than that for one, VW would lose less money, and environmentalists would be stoked to see me driving a retrofitted emissions-test-cheating modern diesel 80 miles a day instead of my Buick. I could live without a trunk for the right price - and maybe even add rack/hitch haul/etc.

Make it a two-seater and put the junk in the backseat. Could fit it in one side and still have room for one backseat position.

I'm still with rope though, might as well make them into parts rather than melt them for scrap, if using them as whole cars isn't realistic.

Whatcan be done with the bought-back VW diesel cars is kinda sorta like what can be done with leftover food.

There are homeless people out there who are eating from trash dumpsters, but any organized effort to feed them with leftover food from grocery stores, restaurants or hunter's kills has to follow all the rules for food safety. Hot food has to stay hot, cold food has to stay cold and most meats must be commercially harvested, not privately hunted or fished.

There are indigent people who can only afford worn-out, oil-burning, bald-tired, worn-braked heaps. These vehicles are most often part of the 20% that produce 80% of the automobile air pollution. Still, there is no legal means of transferring to them any of these vehicles that VW was forced to buy back such that they could be registered for highway use and replace the unsafe and much worsely polluting vehicles that the poor typically own.

Oh, so maybe the phrase "German Watchdog" had you thinking of this:

or this:

or even the old standby:

Well, Dachunds ARE German Watchdogs and should be feared. They can scuff your boots with their teeth, or even draw blood from unprotected toes.

AUDI CAN'T ESCAPE VW GROUP'S EMISSIONS-CHEATING SCANDAL

"Last year, Handelsblatt reported Audi created so-called "defeat" devices that cut emissions back in 1999, years before they were used in up to 11 million VW Group diesel cars sold worldwide."

FICKSET

"Etymology
The breed was named Deutscher Schäferhund by von Stephanitz, literally translating to "German Shepherd Dog". The breed was so named due to its original purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. At the time, all other herding dogs in Germany were referred to by this name; they thus became known as Altdeutsche Schäferhunde, or Old German Shepherd Dogs.

The direct translation of the name was adopted for use in the official breed registry; however, at the conclusion of World War I, it was believed that the inclusion of the word "German" would harm the breed's popularity,[44] due to the anti-German sentiment of the era.[45] The breed was officially renamed by the UK Kennel Club to "Alsatian Wolf Dog",[44] after the French region of Alsace bordering Germany.[25] This name was also adopted by many other international kennel clubs.

Eventually, the appendage "wolf dog" was dropped,[44] after numerous campaigns by breeders who were worried that becoming known as a wolf-dog hybrid would affect the breed's popularity and legality.[25] The name Alsatian remained for five decades,[44] until 1977, when successful campaigns by dog enthusiasts pressured the British kennel clubs to allow the breed to be registered again as German Shepherds.[5] The word "Alsatian" still appeared in parentheses as part of the formal breed name and was only removed in 2010.[46]The breed's officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog in the English language, sometimes abbreviated as GSD and was also formerly known as the Alsatian in Britain."

Volkswagen becomes a felon - http://www.autonews.com/article/2017031 ... ews-weekly

"DETROIT -- After nine years of hiding its illicit, covert actions and at least a year of actively trying to deceive regulators, Volkswagen AG fully admitted its guilt to three federal felonies related to widespread emissions violations.

In an appearance on Friday, March 10, in U.S. District Court here, the German automaker pleaded guilty to conspiracy, obstruction of justice and introducing imported merchandise by means of false statements.

Under the terms of the settlement, if it is ultimately accepted by Cox, VW would pay $4.3 billion in penalties and continue to fully cooperate with investigators. The automaker also agreed to be overseen by an independent compliance monitor for at least three years, as well as a number of other conditions to ensure that it will comply with the law in the future.

If VW hadn't settled, it would have faced $17 billion to $34 billion in fines."

In the comments after the article, Robert.Walter has a lot to say about why there shouldn't have been such a lucrative plea deal.
