Europe uses RON (Research octane rating) and North America uses AKI (Anti-knock index):

- 98-octane (RON) = 93-94-octane (AKI)
- 95-octane (RON) = 90-91-octane (AKI)

98-octane gasoline is usually around 3 cents more expensive per liter than 95-octane.

In the US, the most commonly purchased fuel is 87 AKI. Most vehicles here recommend 86 or 87.

same here fellas. i try only to buy from well known companies. although i like to go for the cheapest among those options, i usually consider my time more wortwhile than the difference in savings and just get whatever's reputable and close.

also, i put 87 in all of my cars unless otherwise required/specified. i used to put 89 in, for years, under the belief it would improve engine life, but i believe that myth has been debunked and with the rising prices in gas, i just can't afford to be dumber than usual.

Can anyone find a graph of gasoline sales in us by octane? I'd like to see the relation and proportion of sales between the different octane levels.

Looks like premium gas sales are going down.

Linky no worky. Brings up a blank PDF that tells me it "may not display correctly because there are errors on this page".

I usually purchase from Cumberland Farms. I think they were Gulf back in the day. It's a toss up between them, Hess, or Sunoco. I tend not to go to Mobil since they seem to be kinda pricey. But like a lot of you guys, I go to trustworthy stations.

I use Hafners (local), Sunoco, or Mobile. Sheetz when its the only place available. Always 93 or (unfortunately) 92 octane as required by my car.
I never use BP because I hate them. I never use Hess because both I and my car hate them. I rarely use Shell because my car gets a hangover.

We have had this thread before.

I think they still have current Gulf branding, it's just not made obvious. Gulf is the brand of gas and Cumberland Farms is the convenience store company. I seem to remember Gulf stations having Cumberland Farms stores on their premises, then a few steps at a time they removed most of the Gulf logos and made Cumberland Farms the primary brand.

That could all be a combination of a rarely-overactive imagination and an always-faulty memory, though.

With winter coming, the need for higher octane is reduced because of the cooler intake air. Try it! (when it's cool in your region)

I'm a Chevron with Techron man, 87 Octane, boo ya! Hey, my car is tuned for 87 octane, it's not (just) that I'm cheap. If I ever get an aftermarket tune for 91 I'll start running it, but I'm not buying it just to further prevent knocks that won't happen anyways. I could spend that money on McRibs.

Chevron mainly because of location. In a perfect world I'd be a 76 guy. But Chevron is my second choice.

Kevin, you have good taste in gas! Wow that sounds weird.
