Painting A Car

Post by nismo »

Im a pretty much, except in some cases, mechanically inclined person. I have a maxima but it really looks crappy. I'll try and post a pic when i get a digi cam. I'm looking to paint the car myself, but i have no autmotive painting background. Has anyone tried this? Where should i get the paint? Is it in anyway possible to not mess up my car? I wont be doing it until summer but i want to be prepared so im trying to gather info ASAP.
Well, maybe shifting isn't so good....after all, it ties up your right hand!!

No painting by yourself. Period.

A shop will charge you upwards of a couple thousand.

I know, its expensive.

Yeah.. you don't want to paint your car with actual glossy car paint
BUT
if it's crappy enough you could just spray paint it and draw nifty designs in lots of colors. my friend did his like a cow.

Unless you plan to spray paint your car, I don't think it'll be an easy job. I don't know what type of sprayer you need, but you definitely need a painting booth, so that no dirt or other particles touch the car during painting and drying.

Paint jobs can be had for cheap if you know people or if you don't mind a maaco paint job.

Yeah I don't think many members had painted their whole cars themselves before. Me either...

Most of us had spray painted some smaller areas of our cars before though. I would love to see a pic of your car before I vote.

PAINT SHOP, it will cost you just as much to buy all the stuff you will need to do it, let somewone else do the work for you, Plus if you mess up you are takeing out of your own pocket to get it fixed, if they mess up they fix it.

I've worked very little at body shops, like a few weeks. But I'm going back so I can use the booth to paint mine. It's not as hard to do as you might think. It's 95% sanding 5% painting.
