IMO the only times that an automatic is better is in a luxury car or SUV. Economy car, sports car, p/u, etc, are all better in stick.
I haven't owned an automatic in several years, and its been almost 2 years since I've driven one. When I DO drive one I can't get over how boring and sluggish it always feels. It can't really compare to rowing your own gears. That said, I've second-guessed buying my Sonic with a stick, it can be a pain if I'm trying to look something up on my phone or try eating breakfast/etc while commuting. I think I just wish someone would come up with a traditional manual trans where you can have an extra "D" gear you can select that will switch over to doing the shifting for you. Maybe that's possible with some sort of dual-clutch setup and electronic shift linkage?
One of these days I'll probably end up getting a slush beater just to have a backup in case of injury or something
Haven't driven an automatic for a year!

Have you heard of DSG trans that VW uses? There's your dual clutch that you can shift manually with paddles.
Edit: not even going to go into the comment of looking up stuff on the phone and eating breakfast.

I haven't driven a slushbox since 2006. On the other hand, the Polaris with its variator could be considered a CVT...
