Give me some road trip ideas.
Alright. So I've got some time off to burn and I'll be off work starting on the 4th of next month and returning on the 14th. I've got a old buddy flying into town on the 9th, so this leaves me with 4th-9th - basically 6 days - to plan a tip.
Give me some ideas folks. I'd like to stay within a day's drive away from Dallas - no more than 10 hours. Preferred activities - hiking, camping and MTB. I'll have Jack with me, as always, but I'm not limited by him in regards to outdoor activities.
Let's hear some ideas, folks. I'm curently considering Big Bend National park on the border of TX and New Mexico. It's a great mountainous place to spend a few days.

Well, there was the road trip when Changed the Oil on a Friday, drove down to St. Louis Misery, then Memphis Tenacity, Narlins Looseyanna, Stuck our toes into the Gulf of Mexico on our way over to San Antonio Tixis, then to Carlsbad New Mexis, then to Phoenix Aridzona, then to Anaheim Callyfornia and stuck our toes into the Pacific Ocean at Newport Beach, then on to Williams Arizona (took the steam train to the South rim of the Grand Canyon) and on to Oklahoma City, St. Louis and back home late Saturday night (there was another Saturday somewhere in the middle of all that). Changed the oil Sunday and back to work on Monday.

Re: Give me some road trip ideas.
How far are the Guadalupe Mtns. from you? Jackie went there with her brother and some friends a few years back and hiked to Guadalupe peak for sunrise. Apparently it was quite nice. You could give that a shot.
Also, not to jack Tonebone's thread, but Jackie and I are also going on a road trip from May 27th-June 11th. I'll c/p what I posted in the misc thread:
"We're planning on hitting Durango/Silverton in Colorado, Grand Canyon (to stay with her brother who's a park ranger there), Zion NP, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley, and a few other assorted things near there, then taking Route 66 back up to Chicago. Anyone have any suggestions for anything in those areas that is cool/neat?"

I know nothing about the kind of vacation you desire. I hate roadtrips and I'm an indoorsy kind of guy.

Re: Give me some road trip ideas.
I remember a long time ago when I could afford road trips. I could afford them so much that I bought a camper and towed it behind my truck. That was fun.

With couchsurfing, staying at her brother's, gas, food, hotel, camping and everything, our budget is $500 a piece for 2 weeks. Not too bad for a road trip. If you plan carefully and bring your own food, you can make it cheap.

Re: Give me some road trip ideas.
Indeed. My road trip will involve getting somewhere and staying camped off the grid for a few days. Quite affordable.
Guadalupe national park does not allow dogs on trails or in the back country - that won't work either.
