What's the worst mpg you've gotten?

Post by ClutchDisc »

Post the type of car, what engine, and the reason you got the poor mpg. (if you can remember)

2001 Chevy S-10 2.2 4cyl, 19 mpg when I was first learning the stick. A lot more revving than necessary when taking off, combined with short trips that had a lot of stop and go.

The worst MPG I've gotten?

2004 Ford CVPI, 4.6L V8, 12MPG consistently because of my worse-than-EPA-City driving conditions (50% of my driving time is spent waiting at traffic lights, and the other 50% is heavy city traffic).

Motorhomes with 7+ liter gasoline engines got around 7 to 7.5 mpg. Then my F150s with the big block 4.9L sixes would get around 14 mpg running empty, even the '95 which was EFI and capable of 17 mpg only got 14 mpg because of my heavy foot. Then I have a4.0 Mountaineer that gets at best 17 and an old Aerostar 3.0 that once got 19 but now gets 17. Recently purchased '99 Plymouth Voyager 2.3L is nice getting 21-22, and my Ranger is very nice, been getting 27 with my heavy foot.

But this thread may inspire some to purposefully see how poor of mileage they can get for a tankfull.

1990 Mazda MX-5 Miata, 1.6L 19 MPG

It was literally the first fill-up I did, and I hooned that car like crazy the first tank. I have never gotten that low MPG since then yet I've been driving it probably harder than I did before. Maybe it just wasn't used to being pushed at such RPM.

Oddly enough, every tank I've autocrossed on has been at least 24 MPG

In my own car about 12L/100km so around 19mpg.

I had to drive a company Yukon XL back from another city once and got about 15mpg........on the highway......running on 4 cylinders.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

Image My pickup, very similar to the Yukon XL, has the same engine except without cylinder deactivation and I've never had such a bad highway tank. Cylinder deactivation does help, though some people dislike the idea of it. Something must have been wrong with that thing.

I have no idea what the worst MPG I've gotten was, but the worst I've recorded is 13.8 this past winter in my truck. I put chains on all 4 tires and only used my truck to plow my driveway all winter instead of driving it on the road much; I drove the Buick to work instead.

The worst I've gotten was probably the dumptruck I used to drive in the family business...Ford 460 gas engine + slushbox + dually truck weighing up to 15,000 pounds (or sometimes more) must have put me well into the single digits.

I think I did about 12-14 mpg while pulling a very full trailer with my parent's Expedition (that they don't have anymore) when it was having a small timing issue. It might have been worse than that. I don't think I've crossed into single digits

10-13 mpg in my MR2 Turbo.

While hooning it got worse mpg than my Camaro Z28 ever did. The Camaro, even with a 5.7L V8, got around 15-16 at worst (track days). The MR2 would bottom out around 13 mpg if you went WOT just a few times per tank. It didn't help that it had turbo lag out the ass (had to rev to 4k+ every gear) and didn't have much of an overdrive (about 3500 @ 60 mph in 5th).

7.6 mpg in the Celica. It's got a 20R/22R "hybrid" engine. The best excuse I can come up with is an extremely rich carburetor setting and excessive idling while tuning the engine.
