Do you participate in sanctioned motorsports?
Just wondering if anyone here on SS does any kind of sanctioned motorsports. We have a pretty good amount of sporty/performance cars here with the right transmissions for the job.
Personally I compete in autocross, and will be participating in track days once I get money and a roll bar.
How about you peeps? And if you don't, why not? Nothing against it, just want to know your reasoning.

No. Why? Because my truck is too slow.

Used to do auto-x all the time with my M3. Haven't yet in my Audi though, but it would probably do fairly well. My drag racing was limited to "street night", "grudge night", and bracket racing. I've drag raced almost every car I've ever owned.

paved track oval stock car driving: limited late model and soon to be whelen modified.
paved sprint track race kart driving; i own a cr80 shifter kart.
lastly, while i haven't participated in it actively, i did enter the chevrolet national autocross competition. i was 67th out of 13965 entrants. there's quite a story to that, but i don't have time to tell it.

Not yet. I plan on some autocrossing with the good FC when it's done. I'd like to do some track days too.

I'd love to take my slowmobile out and have a load of fun despite the fact that at best I may have a chance at placing in the middle of the pack, but racing (even at a grassroots level) won't fit my budget.

I'd love to, however. I'm not very well versed with classes and such but would love to race in a DTM type of class. Production-based cars and street courses.

Re: Do you participate in sanctioned motorsports?
To the people who said they have no interest: That seems interesting to me. Personally, I like cars and I like the function of cars. I like to extract the most performance and fun I can out of a car and motorsports seems like the best way to do it (safely). I always though of cars as a huge fun toy in a sense. Sure it can get you from A to B but I love wringing it out while doing so.
Different strokes I suppose, that's cool. I have my days where I like to drive normally and don't have a desire to push it.
Tony: You should look into a local SCCA or driving club for autox. The Miata club around here lets any type of car race and it's a really great experience. Most clubs will let you race with any type of car for a small additional fee. The Miata club charges $30 for Miatas (who aren't a member of the club; $25 for members with Miatas) and $35 for non-members without Miatas. It's a small price to pay for a whole day of fun. If nothing else, treat it as a new thing to experience just to dip your toes into and see if you like it.
I would love to track and road race, but a member of the club (who autocrosses but does not track his car) brought up a good point at the last autox: Autocrossing, at most might cause you to break a few things on your car (such as a worn part that wouldn't withstand hard driving at that point), but taking your car to the track could mean a completely totaled vehicle if you get something wrong at speed. This is rare, but the possibility is there. As much as I would absolutely love to track my car, unfortunately, I have to stick to the "if you can't afford to write it off without a second thought, don't track it" mantra. Once I get a solid job and a daily driver out of college, my Miata is becoming most likely a dedicated track/autox car.

Re: Do you participate in sanctioned motorsports?
I'm not one of those people, but keep in mind that there is more to being interested in cars and driving than speed. There exists a plethora of different directions that one's interest can go and still be at an enthusiast level, and I see more such variety on this site than on others. Not being interested in racing doesn't limit someone to being a mere A-to-B appliance driver.94Corolla5Speed wrote:To the people who said they have no interest: That seems interesting to me.
