...actually, if your left leg was gone, the thing to do would be to get normal hand controls for gas and brake and use your right leg to operate the clutch pedal. Problem solved.

Yep, I think they have hand gas and brake for guys who have no legs. There are all sorts of handicapped retrofits out there. No reason we can't adapt them to our needs.
