What is your highest level of education?

Post by ClutchFork »

Am curious how "educated" the members of StandardShift are. Or course we all know that there are many highly educated people who self taught and do not hold a degree, and we would not be able to pick that up here without great convoluted processes of elimination. (they say that often the A students end up working for the C students). So instead, we'll keep it simple, and you don't have to reveal it, just vote. I don't know if degrees run differently outside the USA so please excuse me if the selections are inadequate. We can fix it or just see if you can fit it into the existing poll.

If you wish to reveal your educational background, go ahead and tell us what degree, what field it is in, where from etc.

I was on track for a BS in chemistry, then said "F*ck this, I hate desks!" and got an associate's in Automotive Technology instead. Working on cars is way more fun. No desks, and just as much problem solving.

I have a degree, but it's pretty useless (general business type crap). I'm going to try for a better one this fall (Biology with possibly a minor in technical communication).

I am under no delusions that I'm super smart.

I think to a large degree (pun) employeers like to require a degree to avoid total dumbells from applying, as most people who can obtain a legit degree are relatively smart. It also shows that a guy can put up with a heavy work load and messy schedules and get through it. It is also something a person can do instead of getting a job, provided there is some funding source.

I wouldn't doubt that for a minute. The bachelor's degree is yesteryear's High School Diploma. They're more or less required so they don't mean anything anymore. I've been trying to figure out just what I want to do with my life and it's made choosing a degree program hard.

So far I know that I don't want to be doing what I'm doing for the rest of my life, and I really like science. Aside from that I'm at a loss. This time around I am going to be bugging the career services department and counselors as much as I can to stay on the right track. The last thing I want is a ton of student loan debt (most of the way there unfortunately) with nothing worthwhile to show for it.

But if I've learned nothing from growing up in a working class family it's how to "roll with it." We were never anything more than paycheck to paycheck. I learned that life is a b**** and then you die. Low expectations are key.

Getting my Master's degree in naval architecture by the end of this month. Still not sure what I'm going to do afterwards. I've got a job, but there's a PhD position in Norway that pays 50% more...

BA History/French minor. Started Masters program in Library & Information Sciences until I found out it was teaching me the same things I learned in high school for jobs that didn't exist unless I wanted to work in a library. So... yeah, dropped that quickly.

High school diploma.

While I do just fine supporting myself, affording nice things and putting money into savings, I have no delusions that I am platoed out where I work now and I have limited growth from here on out.
In addition, switching jobs on experience alone is difficult which puts me at risk in case of job loss.

Looking at going to school soon for Logistics Management.

A lot of people today are questioning the need for "higher" education. Their focus is often the return on investment. The cost of college continues to rise, while recent graduates are having a difficult time finding a job that pays enough to cover livings costs and pay back those student loans. I suspect that will be a real concern at least until the economy and job market turn around.

When I graduated high school, I went right into the work force. I wanted nothing to do with college. It was only a few years before I realized that a college degree would help knock down the roadblocks that were preventing me from advancing into higher-paying positions within my company that I found interesting & desirable. I decided to bite the bullet and enroll in college while still working full time. It wasn't easy, but I spent the next seven years earning a BS and an MBA. And lucky for me, my employer had a great tuition reimbursement program.....so I finished with no student loan debt at all. So was it worth it? Absolutely. Within five years, I doubled my salary and I had a job that I found fulfilling and rewarding. There's simply no way that would have happened if I decided against going to college. If I didn't go to college, I was considering becoming an entrepreneur, but I really didn't want to work the ridiculously long hours required of someone who owns his own business. I'd rather have a life/work balance that allows me a life outside of work.

I think this thread can be skewed without a known age. Some of the forum members are younger and are still in college so technically they do not have a college degree yet.
