Holy Gods - the BEST kind of Gods, I might add.
I like some metal, but it can seem to be monotonous after a while.
If I were going to sing about death, I'd sing "The Hearse Song"

My Certina, a retirement gift to my father that he gave to me, was stolen years ago. I've been looking for a new watch, but haven't found one that I like and can afford...

Tups, you have to learn to appreciate the cheaper things in life.Tups wrote:My Certina, a retirement gift to my father that he gave to me, was stolen years ago. I've been looking for a new watch, but haven't found one that I like and can afford...
At the least, a watch just needs to show the time. Get a cheap watch and after a year or so you'll have spent more for batteries than the watch cost you. Take the money you saved and go buy some beer.
At the least, a beer just needs to whet your whistle and take the edge off of things. Sure, craft beers are nice, but do you know how many PBRs you can get for the price of a 6-pack of the 'spensive stuff? Take the money you saved and go buy a car.
At the least, a car needs to provide reliable transportation and not cost too much to operate. Go buy one really nice one or buy six cheap ones for the same amount. Go buy a house with the money you saved.
At the least, a house has to shelter you, with enough room to sleep in. Go buy a mansion, or go buy one of these.
or go buy one of these and with the money you've saved throw away that skunky PBR and go buy some real beer.

Speaking of beer. I'm on a hunt for some good IPA's. The summer will (eventually) become fall and it's the best time for IPAs. Time to find good ones now.
To get buy, I've been drinking Sam Adams' Hopology mixed six-pack. It's a mix of decent "entry level" IPAs and IPLs but I want some real stuff.

What type of watch do you like? You can get some excellent quality Seiko automatics or Citizen eco-drives for under $200; some as low as ~$125.Tups wrote:My Certina, a retirement gift to my father that he gave to me, was stolen years ago. I love watches; they are one of the few "accessories" that are also works of art. A mechanical/automatic watch is an amazing machine and a work of art all in one.
And for what it's worth; according to that chart I would be "Forsaken Angels" which I think sounds pretty cool
Re: Any watch guys in here?
Hell's Warriors. I have an analog Citizen solar powered with day and date function. I like the fact that it is a truly wear and forget watch... no windings, no need to worry about charging it when it's off your wrist either. It charges by solar power and stores in a battery that will keep it running for months even in complete darkness. So one day in sunlight every 3 months and you are golden.
Before that I had a Seiko automatic drive... but the fact it used wound springs rather than batteries was an annoyance. It was only good for 36 hours off of your wrist, at which point you need to wear it (or keep it on an automatic watch winder) to keep it running. The Seiko was the better looking watch, I like it's watch face as well as the window on the rear of the watch that allowed you to watch the mechanism at work if you felt like it.

Re: Any watch guys in here?
I do love the Citizen Eco-Drives, really nice watches for the cost in most cases; and pretty tough as well. That was an older Seiko I'm guessing? The newer Kinetics usually have a power reserve of at least a month or more.
My current daily is a Seiko Kinetic perpetual calendar. It has an auto-stop function, if you don't move it for 12 hours the hands all stop to conserve power; and it has a power reserve of up to 4 years.

I like automatic and solar watches. Both my Casio's are tough solar and have a 9 month reserve in full darkness.

Re: Any watch guys in here?
The watch you linked to, Seiko SNK805, is part of the so-called "Seiko 5" family of entry-level mechanical watches. Because they are mechanical, they do not use a battery. But that also means it will stop running and must be restarted after the power reserve runs out after roughly 40 hours, as you noted. Most Rolexes also use an "automatic" mechanical movement that is powered by the motion of the wrist. Such watches are ideal as a "one and only" watch that is worn daily, so that it never "runs out."kevinf wrote:Before that I had a Seiko automatic drive... but the fact it used wound springs rather than batteries was an annoyance. Apparently, Seiko 5's are massively popular in many countries but not in the U.S., where they must usually be sourced from foreign sellers. The day wheel, which is blue on Saturday, red on Sunday, and black on weekdays, is bilingual. That means you can display the day in two different languages (woo hoo). As you mentioned, the case back is transparent so you can see the rotor spin as it winds the mainspring.
The movement (that is to say, the mechanism within), which is coded 7S26, is well-known in watch collecting circles as a workhorse that is virtually bulletproof, even if it is neither finely finished nor pinpoint accurate, as it can be off by 20 sec. or more per day. The 7S26 is an "in-house" movement, meaning it is manufactured by Seiko instead of being outsourced to a third-party supplier. For whatever reason, that is a big deal to collectors. Anyway, at $56 in the Amazon link you provided, it's a great gateway drug for those looking to get into watch collecting.
Many of Seiko's entry-level watches use this same movement, including their legendary dive watches which offer a better depth rating along with an obligatory rotating bezel to time your deep-sea dives ... or the parking meter.
That's more than anyone probably wanted to know, but there you have it.

Re: Any watch guys in here?
I've been thinking about wearing my very basic probably cheapest entry stainless Seiko watch as more of a 'casual' watch. I was just wondering from more watch guys if it'll look goofy.
It looks sort of like that. The faceplate looks the same.
Either that or I was thinking of going with a Casio digital watch.
Something like this.
The reason I ask about the seiko is that I have it just sitting around doing nothing. I'm in college so the amount of times I'm wearing dress clothing is few and far between at the moment.
