Hyundai Sonata. Nothing against the car, but who wants to drive a car which shares a name with a sleep state?
Anything alphanumeric. I don't like trying to figure out the "name" of a car based on a random assortment of numbers and letters.

Actually, most alphanumeric names are rather good and informative.tankinbeans wrote:Hyundai Sonata. Nothing against the car, but who wants to drive a car which shares a name with a sleep state?

350Z - Nissan's Z car; 350 stands for the 3.5L motor in it.
370Z - same as above but with a 3.7L motor.
BMW 328i. 3 series class with a 2.8L motor
BMW 330i - same but with a 3.0
BMW 335i - 3.5L turbo motor
Similar with Mercedes.

y'all know that's not where the name comes from... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonatatankinbeans wrote:Hyundai Sonata. Nothing against the car, but who wants to drive a car which shares a name with a sleep state?
i always loved that name and wanted to have one in large part because of the name. my dad test drove one of the first sonatas, with leather seats and a 5 speed and i was hoping he'd get one; he skipped town instead .
depends, and usually it isn't random.beans wrote:Anything alphanumeric. I don't like trying to figure out the "name" of a car based on a random assortment of numbers and letters.

y'all know that's not right, even if the last two numbers did at one time more closely correlate to the engine size. the current 328 uses a 2 litre turbo engine, the 335i uses a turbo 3 litre (iirc), and the mercedes models follow a similar algorithm. at times, they changed the numbers to differentiate two trim levels to make the lesser model look worse than it was.AHTOXA wrote:

Shit you are right. I posted lots of accidental misinformation in regards to BMW.
edit. reading wiki and it seems 320i uses the 2.0t but you are correct that 328 and 330 are powered by 3.0 na and 335 is powered by 3.0 twin turbo.

So there is a car with the name RAV4, I think by Toyota. I always call it a Rava because the 4 looks so much like an A.
Mazda had a nice idea to name it's pickups with the engine size in cc's.
I don't like the car name, Fit. Makes it seem like the car is a spoiled brat.
How about the Focus ZTS! Who thought that one up?
As long as were are ripping (or is dissing the correct term today) on car names, don't anyone get offended if your car name is ripped (dissed). It's all in fun.

While we're talking about car names, how about trim levels as well?
I enjoy Kia's "+" and "!" levels. What are those even supposed to mean?

There's a model called Kia Cee'd. What's a Cee'd??
I agree with RAV4. As a kid I always called it Rava and it took me a long time to get used to calling it Rav4.

Sonata is a musical term as linked above. However, I pronounce it "snotter". It's really a nice car, whatever you want to call it.tankinbeans wrote:Hyundai Sonata. Nothing against the car, but who wants to drive a car which shares a name with a sleep state?

Alphanumeric stuff avoids the drama of crappy names by being boring and mediocre.
So, how about the Chevy Avalanche? I'm sure the idea was to make people think of all the power in an avalanche, but an avalanche is a deadly disaster.
