To leave a note/confront or not?

Post by AHTOXA »

Well, the old lady that lives directly below me now with her daughter and infant granddaughter smokes. Mostly not a lot but a few times in the evening when I'm home after work. My windows and balcony are open all the time as the weather is nice. When she smokes, she smokes on her balcony below mine and my apartment smells like cig smoke when she's out there.

I hate that smell and it drives me nuts. Keeping the windows closed isn't a viable option.

Do I politely confront? Leave note on door? Pull up my skirt and deal with it? Pros and Cons?

What would you do?

Brave Fahrt would have pulled up his kilt and dealt with it.

I don't want to be THAT guy, so I know what you're saying. Her not smoking on her balcony isn't a fair request.

Not sure what I can do ventilation-wise. All my windows are facing the same side, each flanking the balcony itself. Nothing much I can do, I suppose.

Nope. All my windows are on one side of the building, just like hers.

I've never smoked, but found that I am partial to Marlborough - the brand my Dad smoked.

Can you supply her with some brand you find less nauseous?

It would be just terrible if wild animals were drawn by the odor and marked her balcony as their own.

Well, I guess there's more to this on my side. I'm a former smoker of about 10 years. Not only do I not like the smell, but it's also trying to sabotage my good non-smoking practices. It's a test of will, I suppose. It's weird how I don't like the smell when it's not me smoking. Because when I smoke, the smell obviously doesn't bother me.

Dad complained of smell of smokers after he quit, but when we reminded him he had been a smoker hisself, he said "Yeah, but MY brand didn't stink!"

Does she know that you know she smokes? If not, do it the French way and get involved in a conversation with her and tell her how old it makes someone's skin look when they smoke.

Or do it the other French way and tell her your clothes used to smell like smoke too, but then you found a special detergent to get the smell of coworkers cigarettes out of your clothing.

or tell her story of the love of your life, WATSON'S MOM, and how you had to break up with her when she took up smoking after you puked in her mouth while kissing. (Too vulgar to be French, but still it puts the blame on someone other than your smoking neighbor)

I got a feeling that the skin wrinkles strategy won't go over very well with an older lady if I want to keep on good neighbor terms with her. But to answer your question, no she doesn't know. They are keeping very private. She's not around much and when she is, she avoids conversation. I think I've said one word to her once.

Brochure from a local vape shop under the door might be a place to start...

Probably won't change anything but would at least give you the impression of doing something. Then just a question of not getting the shop in trouble for soliciting they didn't do.

Move. Simple as that.

No other real solution if: A-you want to leave your windows open and B-if she wants to smoke on her balcony.

Well, yeah. Finishing my lease here and moving. I no longer have the good neighbords that I liked before. I'm here until July, however. So I've got plenty of time.
