Toyota plans to put an end to minivan spare tires bouncing down the road

Another in the continuing series of recalls during these times of recall overload.

Toyota recalls 466,000 vehicles to fix rust corrosion, brake pedal problems

"The recalled Siennas are at risk for rust corrosion in the spare tire assembly cable, caused by faulty water splash protectors, which can stem from the protectors’ placement or the protectors coming loose from the vehicle without warning. The corrosion is caused by high concentrations of road salt, which reaches the spare tire assembly cable when the splash protectors fail.

Some of the recalled 2004-10 Siennas were also involved in an April 2010 recall, which included the addition of a water splash protector and an anti-rust agent. These vehicles may have insufficient rust protection."

Thousands of Bolts!

2014 Nissan Rogue recalled for steering issues thanks to an errant bolt -
In cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan will recall the affected Rogues and inspect bolts used and replace as necessary. The issue involves only a few days of production and only one specific production line, which appears to have had the wrong bolts on hand for the assembly of the upper steering assembly.
According to the NHTSA's summary of the problem, an incorrect type of bolt was used to connect the intermediate shaft to the upper steering assembly. The misplaced bolt could rattle loose and fall out, disconnecting the shaft and disabling steering control.

GM to recall 511,528 Camaros for ignition-related defect; 3 other recalls announced

Image

General Motors announced four more recalls today covering more than 500,000 cars sold in the United States -- including every Camaro sold since the current iteration of the iconic muscle car went on sale.

The Camaro recall was prompted by an ignition switch problem similar to the one that bedeviled models such as the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion, but GM said the switch meets all engineering specifications and is unrelated to the ignition system used in the cars included in the previous recall of 2.6 million vehicles.

The Camaro recall affects 464,712 vehicles sold in the United States from the 2010-14 model years, and another 46,816 sold in foreign markets such as Canada and Mexico.

GM dangles dealer bonuses to speed ignition-switch repairs

General Motors is rolling out a series of initiatives to accelerate the fix of 2.6 million cars with faulty ignition switches, including offering dealerships bonus money for speedy repairs.

GM is offering $250 in credit redeemable at an online gift shop to both service and parts managers at dealerships that are able to install at least 90 percent of the ignition-switch replacement kits shipped to them by July 7, according to a June 13 e-mail sent to all U.S. Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships.

The "Ignition Switch Recall Completion Initiative" also will randomly select 50 qualifying dealerships to receive $4,000 in incentive credits, to be split between parts and service managers. One store will be randomly picked for its parts and service managers to share $10,000, according to the notice to dealers.

Aw Gimmee a Brake!

Subaru recalls 600,000 vehicles for brake-line corrosion
Road salt to blame

According to the NHTSA report, saltwater could splash on the lines through a gap in the fuel-tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion. If one of them cracks, problems would obviously occur.

Vehicles affected include the 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, '08-'11 Impreza, '08-'14 WRX/STI and '09-'13 Forester models.

To be included, the vehicles need to be registered in cold-weather, road-salt states. If you live in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia, you will probably be receiving a notice soon.

Article was about NHTSA recall and didn't say anything about owners living in O Canada, but they use salt down there too, right?

I wish corrosion resistance was a higher priority in general, but especially in the brake hydraulic system. It's unreasonable for brake lines, of all things, to rust through while the rest of the vehicle is still solid...but it's quite common, and doesn't seem to discriminate by manufacturer.

I think in general there are aspects that don't get discovered during endurance vehicle testing by an automaker. Corrosion seems to be one of them. It seems that issues with materials don't respond well to accelerated testing. Think of corrosion issues, headlamp lens yellowing, UV paint breakdown, CHMSL Lens melting, etc. Also, I'd submit that most electric radiator fan systems are not taxed too much by proving grounds tests as compared to real world driving in stop-n-go traffic, bumper to bumper - with much less ram-airflow than during the proving grounds testing, real world duty cycles for electric radiator fans are much higher than what is tested.

Another point - as automakers adopt extended vehicle lifecycle goals, there has been no move toward requiring that replacement parts be made available for more than the mandatory 10 years after the vehicle was produced. Considering that the average age of vehicles on US highways has climbed past the 10 year mark, more "old-age" issues will be showing up with vehicles now and OEM parts may not be available to repair them. For vehicles built in large quantities, the aftermarket or the OEM may step up to the challenge, but for small volume production, there won't be as much money to be made for providing repair parts for an extended period of time.

Ford recalls 850,000 vehicles for glitch affecting airbags, seat belts

This is the 12th recall of the 2013 Escape, although a spokeswoman said last month that no single Escape has been involved in all the recalls.

The affected vehicles include the 2013-14 Ford C-Max, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ. Ford said in a statement today the restraints-control module in the vehicles could short circuit, causing the airbag warning indicator to illuminate.

GM halts 2015 Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon deliveries to fix airbag flaw
Launch of crucial new pickups hits a snag

GM said that the pickups’ driver-side airbag connections “were wired incorrectly during the manufacturing process,” which could disrupt their deployment.

“This condition will cause the driver-side airbags to not function as designed and may adversely affect the crash performance of the driver-side airbags,” GM’s notice said.

GM said dealers will be instructed to reprogram the airbag’s sensing and diagnostic module with new software, which is expected to be available “in the next few days.”

It's interesting when software and hardware are so intertwined that you can fix a problem in one by tweakin' the other.

Takata has yet to find 'root cause' of airbag ruptures, executive says

Japanese supplier Takata Corp. today acknowledged that it still does not understand what is causing airbag explosions that have hurtled metal shards into vehicles even as it insisted that calls for a broader recall to remedy the problem were misguided.

Automakers make progress on joint Takata airbag probe
Image
The meeting was prompted by Toyota, which urged the industry last week to band together and hire an independent engineering firm to test and evaluate inflators that have sparked a series of recalls and are linked to five deaths and numerous injuries.

"Based on the initial organizing meeting today, we feel we have positive momentum and look forward to the next steps of the process," the automakers said in a joint statement issued this afternoon.

Automakers who had representatives at the meeting included: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

"Our mutual goal is to ensure that an independent, well-qualified expert is quickly selected in order to further investigate the technical issues involved with the Takata Airbags," the companies said in the statement.
