Takata acknowledges defect in airbags
Pact with NHTSA could prompt historic recalls; 'definitive root cause' not yet found

In a consent agreement with the agency, Takata also pledged to cooperate with “all future regulatory actions that NHTSA undertakes in its ongoing investigation and oversight of Takata,” according to a U.S. Transportation Department statement.

As part of that consent agreement, NHTSA has halted the $14,000 a day in fines it has been imposing on Takata since February for allegedly failing to cooperate with the agency’s investigation. No additional fines were announced today, but future fines are possible depending on the outcome of the agency’s ongoing investigation into the Takata defects.

Testing by Takata, automakers and independent researchers hasn’t yet established a definitive root cause of the malfunction. But NHTSA said its analysis of test results points to exposure to moisture over a long period of time as a factor.

THE AIRBAG RECALL CRISIS
Takata says 265 airbag inflators ruptured during testing

The ruptures occurred in ballistic tests of more than 30,000 airbag inflators Takata retrieved from recalled vehicles, according to company defect reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday. The vast majority of the tested inflators came from vehicles in high-humidity states lining the Gulf of Mexico and outlying U.S. territories, which have been the focal point of the Takata recalls and investigation.

"My door has a mind of its own!" AKA Ford sent me a recall letter.

The recall was actually at the beginning of May, but I just received my letter in the mail so I thought I should add it to the list.
Ford is adding 156,000 more cars to last week’s recall covering faulty door latches, the company said today. It’s the latest in a series of door-latch problems that have affected more than 1.1 million Ford models within the past year.

Pretty sure the WK2 Grand Cherokee is the most recalled vehicle in the history of ever.

P14, P36, P60, P57, N58, P67, P64, P39, P31, N42, R09, P05, L33.....

Granted this is across the entire generation of vehicle. On the other hand, Im only including things classified as safety recalls.

Burn them - WITH FIRE!

Nissan says Takata airbag caused fire in Japan crash
The Nissan spokesman said the car, carrying only the driver, was hit on the driver side. The inflator on the passenger side exploded, smashing the passenger-side window and sending high-temperature fragments into the dashboard, causing a fire.

The driver's left cheek was lightly burned, though it was unclear if the injury was caused by the inflator exploding, the spokesman said. In Japan, the driver’s seat is on the right side of the car.

The case is Nissan's first known abnormal deployment of a Takata inflator in Japan, and the fifth confirmed case in the country across automakers. Nissan said there have been nine similar cases involving its cars in the U.S.

General Motors Researchers Invent NEW way for Ignition Switch to FAIL

A patent has been applied for to prevent any other automaker from equipping any of their vehicles with switches which might fail in this new manner.

"And those diesel engineers at VW thought THEY were such smarties!" said the head of GM research at the press conference announcing this latest recall. "Lets see them come up with more ways to make their engines pollute, IF THEY CAN!"

From Automotive News:

"GM said some of the trucks have an ignition lock actuator gear with an outer diameter that is larger than specifications, which can make it more difficult to turn the ignition key. The key can get stuck in the “start” position, a problem that is more likely to occur with warmer interior temperatures, GM said.

A “significant jarring event,” or a cooling of the cabin, could cause the lock cylinder to move out of “start,” rotate past the “run” position and into the “accessory” position, GM said. That would cut power steering and brakes and deactivate the airbag in certain crashes"
