Need your suggestion for vacation ideas
I posted this on another forum I frequent and will repost here as well. Looking to hear some ideas.
Hey, folks. I've got a ton of paid time to burn this year and I'm looking for suggestions on what to do outside of what I've already got planned. Here are a few requirements and guidelines.
Baseline criteria
- I'm based in Dallas area
- vacation span can be anywhere from a few days to a week and a half straight
- where ever I go, it must be by car (traveling with dog). I'm taking the Sonic, so getting to remote trailheads can be an issue.
- dog is a seasoned companion and no special considerations need to be made when choosing an area; nothing is too steep or too tough for him
- real remote backwoods are preferred. I'll have gear and protection from 4-legged as well as 2-legged creatures with me
- Looking to do this first week of June but dates are flexible
Activity requirements:
- traveling with dog and taking gear so I'm driving
- backwoods camp, hike, MTB, backpack - some sort of a combination of these is a MUST. standard campgrounds will work in the worst case scenario IF the other activities nearby are exemplary.
- would prefer to limit one-way driving distance to within 600 miles or less.
- national parks are out of the question, because none of them allow animals on the trails in the backwoods.
So give me some good suggestions, folks! So far, I'm really digging the Caprock area, which offers most of what I've listed.
I'm also digging the Ouachita trail system - it's very long and stretches can be quite remote. I have an option of hiking point-to-point and for a small fee, there's a service where the locals will pick me up from a predetermined exit point and drive me back to the car.

Too bad you can't come to Minnesota and the boundary waters. They're beautiful.

Yes. I would even try to make that, pending vacation time and a permanent job.watkins wrote:SSmeet!

I might cross the border for that. Those customs guys are always a barrel of laughs.
You got any firearms in the vehicle?
Nope.
Well, shit, you're gonna need these then.

This. I've been twice. Fantastic trips - except for pooping in the woods. Mosquito bites on the butt aren't fun.tankinbeans wrote:Too bad you can't come to Minnesota and the boundary waters. They're beautiful.

I'd be up for an SS meet, but I'd really prefer to not spend more than one day driving. That would push my max range to about 900-1000 miles. That's absolute max I'm gonna do in a day.

On Duck Dynasty Jep had this toilet seat that fits into his hitch receiver. They gave him SO much grief for it but I thought it was a brilliant idea.Squint wrote:This. I've been twice. The Bumper Dumper doesn't protect against mosquitoes, does it? I guess there's the version with the bag, but that cranks up the "ick" factor x1000.monkeyhunk wrote:On Duck Dynasty Jep had this toilet seat that fits into his hitch receiver. No, but it sure does eliminate that factor of balancing on your feet whilst trying to avoid getting it on your pants or shoes.

Re: Need your suggestion for vacation ideas
No need to balance on feet. You find a strong, young tree and grab onto it with your hand(s) extended outward while you squat. Perfect position and you don't have to actively balance yourself since you're holding on. That way you can extend out to make sure you don't get it on your shoes or pants.monkeyhunk wrote:No, but it sure does eliminate that factor of balancing on your feet whilst trying to avoid getting it on your pants or shoes.
Anyway, back to vacation ideas or meet ideas.
