Subaru-sponsored study identifies safe dog harness
"In the book Citizen Canine, author David Grimm examines whether dogs are on the edge of becoming legal “persons” in this country.
For those who think the answer is, or is close to becoming, yes, Subaru of America has significant news: Only one of the 11 dog harnesses designed for use in cars can be rated “acceptable.”
Subaru funded a study late last year with the Center for Pet Safety that would rival tests for human restraints, such as seat belts or child seats, in cars.
Over three months, the center tested 11 dog safety harnesses in a variety of crashes on various-sized dog dummies, standing in for real canines from 25 to 75 pounds, the study said.
Only one harness was acceptable: Sleepypod’s Clickit Utility harness."

STUDY FINDS PET SEATS UNSAFE
Speaking of Subaru, over the last several months we’ve highlighted how the automaker has partnered with the Center for Pet Safety to test travel products for our furry, 4-legged friends. Phase one tested pet harnesses, then they tested crates and carriers, and now they’re releasing the results for pet travel seats. And let me tell you, they’re not good. It found that pet travel seats offer little to no protection in the event of an accident. At best they may help distract a pet while driving around. As you could guess, CPS does not recommend using pet seat. So, what does it recommend? For small dogs and cats it says to use a top performing carrier, while for medium to large dogs it recommends its top performing crate from Gunner Kennels or a certified pet harness.

My dog enjoys hanging out the window far too much to be restrained in a car. Wouldnt be so bad if he had even a little bit of self-preservation ability

Re: Subaru is going to the dogs
I had a dog who I let hang out the window when I drove in a subdivision. She was leaning out, sampling the breze, when I rounded a corner and I saw that when she knew her inertia was going to carry her out the window, she jumped and kinda tumbled along the curb. I stopped the car, opened the door and called to her and she sheepishly walked up and got into the car again. Dogs know when they do something stupid.watkins wrote:My dog enjoys hanging out the window far too much to be restrained in a car.
