My nephew's 3rd birthday is coming up. Thank you for the shopping list. Actually I already gave him Lincoln Logs last Christmas. He understands the idea but isn't any good at building yet.

I had some of that stuff, and some similar but more modern stuff.

If I still had all of my Legos, I'd be playing with them right now  . I knew a kid who had an Erector set, I was mad jelly.

Legos used to be more generic - now, a given Lego set builds a distinct object. Less creativity.

Only if you assemble it in the least imaginative way. Lego are still Lego, if you don't follow the directions they still work the same as they did before -- except you have a much better variety of specialized pieces.

Doesn't matter. So he builds the pirate ship. Does he set sail and spend the rest of his life on it? No. Does he shellac it and put it in a trophy case? No. He builds it, displays it for a while, then tears it down and builds other stuff. Not to mention, he might just ask for a Lego set, not specifying which one, because he just wants Lego with which to build what he sees in his mind.

Sure, people are building what's pictured on the box, but that's not preempting them from building what they imagine. The kid who begs for the Pirate Ship kit wasn't imagining anything before, but he'll have the materials when he DOES think of something else to build.

No Shellac, but it stays a pirate ship up on a shelf.

I have noticed Legos becoming more 'specific'. Rather then using basic bricks to construct a component, many newer kits have specially molded single pieces that serve one purpose.

The Legos handed down to me from an older cousin were just blocks of plastic, a set of blueprints and a whittling knife.

I have this on my shelf and a box of assorted LEGOs in the storage room waiting for my future kid (or just me):
