You would assume that since the carjacker was in the passenger seat already, he would have noticed it wasn't an automatic while he was waiting for the driver to return...

Something exactly like this happened at the hospital near me. A med student got carjacked, the robbers wanted him to stay in the car and teach them how to drive stick. If I remember correctly they found the car up a curb a few blocks down.
