Transverse FWD Powertrain has an efficiency advantage over longitudinal FWD, RWD, AWD or 4WD - you lose more power when you change the plane of rotation. With all the shafts from the crankshaft to the half-shafts running East-West, you're never turning the power around a corner.

The same claim could be made for Transverse RWD Powertrains - they're just not very common.
