Most use an auto. Its actually more efficient for a drag, as well as being one less thing to worry about as youre blasting down the 1/4 mile.

a lot of drag racers use stick..like prostock, my favorite dragsters, i think they have a tendenct to be a stick many if not most of the time. Stick is better, or atleast equal to automatics if you drive the living crap out of it with a lot of skill. The problem comes in when your bracket racing..or racing for concistency. It's very hard to stay consistant with a fast car that is equipped with a manual.
Automatic: preset stall converter, all that you really have to worry about is how you get off the line and do it the same way each time. they've also got good bands and pressure settings equipped for racing..they can shift on the dime extremley fast.
No matter what though, you always remember the basics..its still a automatic, and it's got a torque converter and it will lose power because of it as a result. Also; try driving a race prepped car with an automatic transmission with a high speed stall converter..a car like that would not be streetable. On the opposite, you can have a 9 second street car if it is a manual..try doing that with an automatic.

Thanks guys, Ya, I'm going to bracket race a stick. Right now I need a little more seat time, I'm a bit slow on the tree  and still tuning the car doesn't help. My trans is bilt for it, I should only be using the clutch to leave. When I remember to shift without the clutch it's very consistance.

95%+, of bracket racers, sportsman racers, and most class racers use those autothingys.

Yes, it's a clutchless shifted, dog ring/face plate box, with an inline shifter. Just pull, push, pull, push  .

Thanks for the kind words.
Planning a track outing in Jan. Shooting for 9.2X's

I'm going to do some in car vid, will see how that comes out.

Hoping my in car vid looks as good as these guys...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yjFknIOgNk
The main screen was a 5 speed like mine, and his opponent (small screen) is a 4 speed car.
Both are shifting with out the clutch.

Here is another 4 speed Camaro in car...

Ok update, some good some bad, lets do bad first.
In Jan 09 before I even made a pass broke 5th gear dog ring in the burn out box, my falt.
Next in March after fixing the trans and a clutch rebuild (was adjusted to tight) new smaller tires and few other issues, I crashed it.
Crash vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkB2rMIfXW0

Now for a small amount of good news.
After the crash I carefully tried it again in May.
Here is the launch test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UZW6smFtw
New best 60 foot 1.32 :D

Then a full pass test here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF7_XaL2jSU
New best ET 9.28

There is still a little more in it, but I'm planning to go slow and sneak up on it.
No more crashing I hope  Very embarassing

I'm guessing something was wrong with the track surface that day, since there were 2 crashes in a row? If that's the case it's not that embarassing  .

I was once a member of FHRA (Finnish HorRod Assosiation) and I was few times with some teams when they went to test their cars.

once I had an offer to test Outlaw class car, owner knew that I can drive on curvy tracks guite well, but I had never had tried any "fast" car on drag
just some C class 11 sec cars...

He gave me a chace to test his 7 sec/190mph Chevy nova, and I went for it...
I managed to do something around 8 sec, 160mph. and god damn I was scred of that thing after the test
He was just askin "How do I feel, now when I have tested a fast car?" I couldent anwser to that, damn I was shaking so much, that I couldent light my smoke myself

so did you just give it to much gas off the line and it spun out? how much rpms are you supposed to be launching at anyway? cause i know you cant just bounce it off the rev limiter, dump it and expect to have traction right? you have to wait til you get moving a bit before you can stab the gas to the floor
