Shouldn't have given the aftermarket remote to the dealer when dropping it off.

^ This.
And a bunch of other things.
For God's sake, there is a giant chain of stupidity that leads up to this event.
Far as I'm concerned, the dealer and the owner both share blame. They both did dumb crap.

Re: Bad Idea to Bypass Neutral with an Aftermarket Autostart
It is possible to have a safe remote start + manual transmission combination. Many of them require you to use the remote to shut off the car or else it won't start the car. So, you get out, leave the car running, lock the doors and walk away, press the button. If it's safe enough to leave running as you walk away, it's safe enough to start remotely.
The only issue is if you leave the window open and somebody leans in to shift it without unlocking the door (which would cancel the remote start's ready state).

What I want to know is why did he feel the need to use the remote start? He could've just as easily hopped in and started it with the key.

i went into the local town fair tire earlier to help get my buddies new tires for him (having a truck that can't haul anything still comes in handy sometimes) and there was a sign taped to the counter that read "If you have a remote start in a manual transmission car please let a technician know. Any damage done to the car due to lack of forewarning will be at customers fault"
Re: Bad Idea to Bypass Neutral with an Aftermarket Autostart
Apparently the remote start button wasn't labeled and the guy thought he was unlocking the doors :/1974Alfa5spd wrote:What I want to know is why did he feel the need to use the remote start? He could've just as easily hopped in and started it with the key.
(that's what I gathered they said, anyway)

Not all require anything special. My remote:
A single press just like unlocking triggers the remote start.

Re: Bad Idea to Bypass Neutral with an Aftermarket Autostart
I am personally against the idea of auto-starters.
Really, I like to manually start it for reasons like giving the fuel pump time to prime first, then cranking just enough for the ecu to fire and start the motor. Sometime and extra fuel prime when its really cold out is good to do as well...and the starters out there well....just wont do that for you.

...actually, it's for those reasons that I do use my remote starter. Mine primes the fuel pump just right, then it cranks, then it quits cranking at exactly the right moment. With my fuel pressure problem, it's a dependable way to prime it exactly right, consistently.

Looks like they're not selling my model anymore, but I suspect that any of the same manufacturer's units will have the same priming delay.
