In the video I saw the woman start geting out the door as the train overtook the car. It's a wonder she wasn't killed.

It is the silliest thing in the world to see a huge SUV or pickup slow down and daintly cross a speed bump. Makes you want to get a locomotive horn about 2 inches behind their head and blast it. Wake them up or something. What are they worried about? Might actually use the shock absorbers or something? Wouldn't want to wear out the suspension now on this $50,000 behemoth that they can't even park in a normal parking spot. I don't know what people are thinking when they buy vehicles--much less what they are thinking when they attempt to drive them.

I haven't been there much but it's always a zoo.
DrJerryrigger wrote:Really people were driving normal parking lot speed, then full on floored it just before the bump.
Seems like a lot of people in that state drive: flooring it, holding speed, or slaming on the brakes. Nothing in between even when it's snowing. I think that's the time in my life I grew a phobia of not being the driver when ever traveling.
Yeah, that is generally true in RI and the portions of CT and MA that I drive daily.

Edit: Actually, they don't floor it until they've exceeded the speed limit. They tend to accelerate at a snail's pace until then.
DrJerryrigger wrote:Maybe my stoned friends were not the best representative of RI driving.
No, they should be. Most of RI is stoned. I can't believe RI wasn't the first to legalize. I think everybody's too stoned to do anything about it.

Image I think it's especially funny when I fly over a speed bump in a compact car while a huge SUV with humongous tires stops short of the bump like an elephant afraid of a mouse.

Or how about a wobbly bicycle rack hanging off the back of a pickup with an empty bed, with a 50 pound $50 bike dangling precariously, or a 4 foot stepladder strapped loosely to ladder racks with a 6 foot empty bed below, or skis on a difficult-to-reach rack above the cab...heaven forbid you actually haul anything in that bed, right? Then again, people have no idea how to secure things in beds either, which is why you see ladders and trash barrels on the road and people wiping out while swerving around them.

Well, cow, don't know about huge SUV's you've seen, but offroad rigs don't do well with bumps at high speed. Many people thing that lifted trucks with 33s and 35s should just blast through bumps, but it's actually quite painful for the driver. Offroad suspension is durable and rugged but by no means smooth.

Yet another reason why lifted trucks are dumb (unless you actually offroad with it - I can almost guarantee most lifted trucks around here barely see dirt, much less dried creek beds or anything more difficult). The trucks that see dirt are the farm trucks with random dents and grass sticking out places that are in the 5+ year old range. Those trucks are used properly.

Anyway, I was talking about stock late model full-size pickups and SUVs. Those are made to swallow up bigger bumps than that at highway speed without the occupants even noticing. Even older ones like mine...though some abusively hard work has worn out and stiffened the suspension over the years on mine, most have never done any more work than hauling a few Ikea tables.

What most of those pick-up drivers fear from the railway tracks is spilling their $6 lattés.
