National average tax on gas is $0.49 per gallon, so even at the recent lower prices, that isn't a 25% tax rate.IMBoring25 wrote:Only on a comparative basis is on the order of 25% "very little tax."

It is my intention to pay $2.68 for ethanol free top tier gas later this evening. $.49 of tax would comprise 22.4% of that. Were I less picky I could have paid $2.23 on the way home. That would be 28.2%.

In the peninsulas, we pay more for fuel than you do. Still, 25% of $2 is $0.50, so how are you calling .49/2.23 as 28.2%?IMBoring25 wrote:It is my intention to pay $2.68 for ethanol free top tier gas later this evening. $.49 of tax would comprise 22.4% of that. It is still a pittance when you look toward the rest of the world - they aren't paying more for fuel because the oil cost them more, the difference is in how much tax they pay.

My point exactly WRT comparatively low taxes.
I get the numbers I get because that's not the right equation. 0.49/2.23 would give you the tax rate to have $0.49 tax on a $2.23 purchase for a total per-gallon price of $2.72. As the pump price includes the tax the right equation is 2.23/(2.23-0.49) - 1 = 0.282.

Ewer saying "Six" and I'm saying "Half Dozen". 25% of what I'm paying for a gallon of gas is more than the tax I'm paying on that gallon of gas.IMBoring25 wrote:My point exactly WRT comparatively low taxes.

...and on a dark and stormy night, all the world leaders were called together to the evil Count Dooku's lair and they all agreed that gas taxes in their countries would be used to fund the dark side of the force. That's why 76% of what they pay for gas is tax. Luckily, the U.S. postal system lost the invitation and our president never got the invite to attend the meeting.
