GERMAN OEM SCANDAL BREWING
The German newspaper Der Spiegel says this could become the biggest business scandal in German history. The EU is investigating German automakers for allegedly colluding on the development of various automotive components, including diesel emission systems. The German government is going to launch its own investigation into Daimler, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche. At least 200 employees from those companies were involved in 60 different committees. The investigations do not include Opel, which was owned by General Motors, or Ford of Germany. If the German automakers are found guilty of collusion, the fines could be in the billions. Daimler declined to comment on the allegations, as did Volkswagen, but VW scheduled an emergency meeting of its board to discuss the issue. BMW denies any collusion, while a media report in Germany says Audi could remove four of its board members.

Wouldn't that be cooperating, not colluding? I would think colluding would be if they worked together as a racket to increase prices or effect political changes...engineering cooperation is, as discussed recently, common and mostly good for consumers and manufacturers alike.

Presumably, I would expect cooperation becomes collusion when there is some underlying illegality to the common objective. With VAG being involved and diesel emissions systems being specifically mentioned, I'd say the allegation is that they were "cooperating" on ways to circumvent emissions regulations...Or to influence an election somewhere.

275,000 Diesel VWs Looking for a Good Home?
WASHINGTON -- The EPA and California Air Resources Board on Thursday approved a fix for 326,000 Volkswagen AG diesel cars, the agencies and the automaker said.

The fix will include hardware and software upgrades, including replacing an emissions catalyst but will reduce vehicle fuel economy ratings by as much as 2 miles per gallon. (No mention if the fix affects engine performance)

The world's largest automaker will still need to obtain approval for a resale plan for the 2009-14 model diesel vehicles after making repairs -- something that is expected in the coming weeks -- but the fix is a significant milestone for the company that aims to move beyond its diesel emissions crisis.

The approval is also a key step toward allowing the carmaker to resell or potentially export tens of thousands of diesel cars it has repurchased and is storing all over the United States.

As of the end of May, Volkswagen had 37 secure storage facilities around the United States housing close to 275,000 vehicles. Those places include a shuttered suburban Detroit football stadium, a former Minnesota paper mill and a field near a raceway in Colorado.

The only vehicles without a fix are manual 2012-14 Passat diesels.

VW Trumps Daimler (This is HUGE!)

VW OFFERS BIG INCENTIVES FOR DIESEL TRADE-IN - from Autoline Daily
Last week, the German government announced it will accept software updates to fix diesel engines in an effort to reduce pollution. And to help clear more old diesels off European roads, the Volkswagen Group is offering big incentives for trade-ins. Both VW and Audi are offering rebates up to 10,000 euros, or about $12,000, for owners with diesels that meet Euro 1 to 4 standards. Porsche is offering up to 5,000 euros. In addition to that, the company is offering extra incentives between 1,000 and 2400 euros, towards the purchase of an electrified or CNG powered vehicle. The incentives are available until the end of the year. Daimler and BMW, have also announced similar programs but aren’t offering as much as the VW group.

GERMAN CAR BUYERS SHUN DIESELS - from Autoline Daily
Uh-oh, more problems in diesel land. German consumers are shunning used diesel cars and they’re piling up on dealers’ lots. Car dealers report they have 300,000 diesel cars from 2015 worth about $5 billion with no interested buyers. Some German cities are talking about banning diesels unless they meet Euro 6 emission levels. But the cars that aren’t selling cannot meet those standards and consumers don’t want to buy a car that may be banned. Making matters worse, other diesel owners want to sell their cars as soon as possible before they drop in value even more. There are at least 6 million diesel cars in Germany that only meet Euro 5 standards.

PSA ACCUSED OF CHEATING ON DIESEL EMISSIONS from Autoline Daily
Uh-oh! Another automaker is being accused of cheating on diesel emissions. According to French newspaper Le Monde, investigators in France are alleging that PSA, the parent company of Peugeot and Citroen, installed emission cheating software in nearly two million vehicles. When the investigation was announced earlier in the year, PSA’s chief engineer acknowledged that emissions treatment in its diesels were deliberately reduced at high temperatures to improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions in certain situations. But, PSA denies it did anything fraudulent or illegal. This sounds very similar to the claims FCA made for diesel engines in Rams and Jeep Grand Cherokees.

VW’S DIESEL WOES CONTINUE- Autoline Daily
Volkswagen set aside nearly $27 billion to help pay for its diesel scandal in the U.S. Part of that was to help pay for retrofitting nearly half a million vehicles that were equipped with emissions cheating software. But the fix is harder and taking longer than the company anticipated. Because of that, VW is setting aside another $3 billion to fix the engines, which pushes its scandal cost to nearly $30 billion in the U.S. And Bloomberg reports that will put a big dent in its third quarter numbers. Analysts estimated around 4.5 billion euros in earnings for the company but that charge will drop it by more than half.

"Volkswagen on Friday said the plans were turning out to take significantly longer and were technically much tougher than anticipated. The complications, which the company didn’t specify in detail, amount to about 5,000 euros per car."

They Should Have Carried Broad Collusion Coverage!
German automakers are in a world of trouble with European Union authorities. WardsAuto reports that Audi, Daimler, BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen are accused of violating anti-trust laws and are facing fines of nearly $60 billion. The collusion, which the German media dubbed “Das Kartell,” centers around the AdBlue fluid need to control diesel emissions. The system needs a 5-gallon tank to work properly. However, the German automakers are accused of colluding to use a 2-gallon tank, which made AdBlue ineffective. Volkswagen and Daimler could see reduced penalties since they blew the whistle on the violations. But the automakers could still be sued by individuals or companies in the EU and it’s also possible that they could be slapped with additional fines by U.S. authorities.
http://wardsauto.com/industry/collusion ... ons?page=1

The real deal is that they designed their engines to use less Diesel Exhaust Fluid by cheating on emissions standards and letting them pollute more than required. If they had met emissions, folks would have been peeved by how often and how much more it was costing to fill the 2 gallon DEF reservoir. With a 5 gallon reservoir, the refill times get stretched out and not such a PITA to keep up with...but prolly no difference price-wise. Oh, and that extra 3 gallons of DEF reservoir capacity might have to come out of the trunk space.

Schmidt Happens in the Wurst Possible Whey

Ex-VW exec Schmidt gets max 7 years, $400,000 fine for U.S. emissions violations
http://europe.autonews.com/article/2017 ... -emissions
Schmidt, the former general manager of Volkswagen's U.S. Environment and Engineering Office in suburban Detroit, has been in custody since his arrest in January while attempting to return to Germany from a family vacation in Florida.

I feel sorry for Oliver...he owned a home here, he lived here for many years, he was like one of us....but I'm sure that at his level and position he knew about any and all emissions test cheating at VW. I doubt any of the other VW or Audi executives will ever make themselves available for prosecution. He was the excaped gote that got caught and the judge threw the book at him.

He was one of the best guests they had on Autoline Afterhours.
