Re: The Most Reliable Motor Vehicle I Know Of 1988 Toyota Pickup
240,000 miles isn't all that much, I often read reports of 500,000 on all brands of vehicle with the original engine and transmission. I've got 181,000 miles on my GMC and haven't really maintained it well.
Where I live, that truck would have rusted into dust. We don't have those here anymore because they didn't make them with any ability to resist corrosion. Toyota was even buying them back a couple years ago (and may still be doing so) due to the rust.
The complete lack of even the smallest mechanical failures (well, if you don't count the master cylinder) may have something to do with the non-corrosive environment combined with these maintenance habits:
So, the statement "it has yet to suffer any significant mechanical problem" obviously doesn't count the catalytic converter, master cylinder, and who knows what else as a "significant mechanical problem".
I'm not saying that it's not a well built vehicle, but it's not out of the ordinary. The only thing out of the ordinary was the maintenance habits of the owner.

Also, why has the catalytic converter been replaced? That's NOT a "normal wear item", any more than the engine, transmission, fuel pump, wheel bearings, or rest of the exhaust are. Sure, you might expect some of those things to fail in 20 years of 12,000 miles per year driving, but they're not scheduled maintenance normal "wear items".Unlike your typical Toyota-driving warlord, however, BIL has maintained his truck with obsessive care. Oh, sure, the body and interior are beat to crap (which is to be expected when a vehicle spends most of its life living in L.A., San Francisco, and Oakland), but every single mechanical maintenance item has been carried out on the dot. You're looking at the single major failed component of this truck's 240,000-mile lifetime in the photo above: the master cylinder went bad about 5 years back. Other than that, only normal wear items such as brake pads, catalytic converter, etc., have been replaced. The original clutch is still working fine. Even by Toyota standards, we're talking absurd reliability here.

My friend, who may or may not read this, has a 15 year old Mazda truck that he beats the shit out of every time he drives that has nearly 300k miles on it. It still runs nearly perfectly with only average preventative maintenance.

1993 Mazda RX7 with stock overly-complex twin turbos, no cooling mods and an open exhaust without a ported wastegate is the definition of reliability.

240k on an 88 model? pfft
my brother has almost 230k on his 2001 prelude and the only thing he's done is replaced the clutch, done a tune up, and maintain the car regularly (somewhat).
still, those little toyota trucks are pretty reliable. i've seen some with 350k+ on them with original engine/tranny

Yeah, a Mazda B can be bitchslapped like the best of 'em and still run. My dad's friend had an old B series that lasted him ages and ages and ages, finally had to junk it with a couple hundred thousand on it...
But there aren't a whole lot of vehicles that'll survive being drowned, beaten, crushed, crashed, blown up, dropped off a building, hit with a wrecking ball, and being torched.
2013 Ford Fiesta + a bike and a land yacht which are in pieces.

Re: The Most Reliable Motor Vehicle I Know Of 1988 Toyota Pickup
pretty much anything toyota from the 80s will last like that. except a 86+ supra and 89+ cressida both with the 3l L6 that blows head gaskets every few years. heck, I've got a 90 cressida with that engine and the engine's got almost 200k with only one BHG I know of. Supras/cressidas with the 2.8l L6 are about as reliable as the trucks

My frend has 2, and his dad had 3 of these...
all driven over 1,000,000 km (621k miles) and all in good enough shape to drive...
(note the yearly overall safety condition inspection)
-heavyly salted rodas, leads to rust, leads to fail this test
All of those are on original 3 litre N/A inline6 diesel engine, and original transmission (2 of those are automatic)
and all of those are bought with 500-2k euros within 4 last years
