Putting it together is not that hard, it's like playing Lego. But designing the mechinery is an art.

Actually, designing is simple but very boring. There are hundreds of people designing parts of the engine. Everyone knows how everything works, but the experts on piston rings probably don't know the intimate details about connecting rods.
This is not the James Watt days when just one dude design and build the same engine.
